The Weimaraner

Although he belongs to the oldest hound races, the Weimaraner (fortunately) is not yet very well known.

Concerning the origin of the race a lot of divergent theories have been developed. Anyway the Weimaraner is considered as a senior purify bred German standing hound race.

The French claim, that France is the cradle of the Weimaraners and indicate on old partition moquettes and paintings on which  a resembling dog has been represented. Just much later, after breeding to the French court in decline had affected, the court of Weimar took  over this task, where this hound with its striking grey colour definitively got the name Weimaraner. For a long time the breeding of this hounds was the exclusive right of the Weimar court. The tale goes, that even to Bismarck the possession of a Weimaraner was refused. After the fall of the German empire the Weimaraner disappeared practically of the stage. Fortunately the race not entirely went lost and even in that time there where dog-lovers who guarded the race for extinction. After the second world war the interest grew in the United Kingdom and America. The first two (sterile) Weimaraners where exported in 1928, to America. Ten years later Weimaraners were again transmitted to America, whereupon the first nest in 1939, bred in the United States, was born. In the United Kingdom the first Weimaraners were imported in 1954. Both in France and in the United Kingdom and America the Weimaraner lived a new rise. The "Gray Ghost" such as the Americans call him, particularly because of its colour, but especially because of its cat-like smooth apperences. He did in some states of America, such as Wisconsin, service as a police dog. In tokio he acted as a "drug dog" and at the police force of the city London for a long time Weimaraners ran as bloodhounds between the German shepherds. They also acted in films. This way Weimaraners were the faithful companion of the western-movie star "Roy Rogers". But ebove the Weimaraner is an all-round hunting hound. The Germans consider him as the aristocrat under the hounds. He is suitable for the hunting on all game, both for and after the shot and he can serve under all circumstances. Beside its love for the hunt the Weimaraner is also an excellent house dog . He really loves companionship. Not only for his master, yet also for the rest of the family he goes true fires. It is a spirited dog with a clearly own character, that with gentle yet firm hand must be educated very consequently to be able to grow into an ideal comrade. It goes without saying, that this spirited hound also needs the necessary space and movement. A couple times a day "a stroll around the block" is not enough for him. He must have the occasion to get rid of its energy. He must be able to run freely. It’s a dominant hound who needs a lot of exercise, if you don’t have the time and patience get something else !
